Message | Our party sympathises with some of the aims of this proposal, because we agree that the authorities don't have enough discretion over how to handle marches. However, we think this particular proposal, which allows police to disperse groups "without giving any reason", goes too far. We would support a more balanced option: "The police may disperse a group if they believe it poses a potential risk to public safety". |
Date | 05:28:31, July 23, 2005 CET | From | Alliance of Free Persons | To | Debating the Riot Act 2082 |
Message | The Alliance of Free Persons sees the logic in the Democratic Alliance's stance and agrees and will release the amended bill to vote. |
Date | 12:13:47, July 23, 2005 CET | From | Pragmatic Socialists | To | Debating the Riot Act 2082 |
Message | The people must always have the right to demonstrate or join clubs. It must only be dispersed if it is a danger to national security or order. Therefor, the police of every state must be able to disperse a demonstration or gathering, but must give a reason why, wich can be contested for a judge. Therefore, we abstain voting, even when we have no seats. |
Date | 21:58:13, July 23, 2005 CET | From | Sanctaphrax Party | To | Debating the Riot Act 2082 |
Message | We believe the right to protest is a fundemental right, but once that protest gets violent then it is no longer acceptable, and the people protesting lose said rights. |
