| Conctraceptives are a completely private good and as such, the economic rules applying to private goods also apply to it. By giving them away for free, we are encouraging 'free riders' and the chance that people will get large quantities of them, and resell them in remote areas or other countries, forcing the government to provide more, a major burden on the taxpayers. Contraceptives give external benefits but are not public goods (would you use a condom that anyone can use at will?), and as such should be subsidized, not given away for free. |
