Message | "We see tobacco's marketers as evil corporations, and wish to restrict their marketing tactics," HAHAHAHAHAHAHA - and alcohol corporations don't? You wish to allow alcohol to be sold to all minors? Considering our economy is so rubbish (thanks to the socialists) every kid would be in the pub all weekend! http://www.drinkaware.co.uk/effects_q1.php http://www.drinkaware.ie/effects.php http://www.alcohol.gov.au/ The poplibs are outrageous and this bill just bonkers. |

Message | As if that happens in countries (OOC much of Europe) in which alcohol sales to minors are totally legal? |

Message | If we're speaking OOC'ly, I've seen huge drunk and disorderly behaviour of minors - people aged 15, 16 in Spain much more so than I've seen in any other country. They have a low age for alcohol consumption. Either that or they simply don't enforce their laws. IC: It just doesn't work. But I respect your views on the topic. However, I would urge you to consider the fact that alcohol does to a lot of damage to you. |

Message | OOC: While in real life I'm well above the drinking age now (and rarely drink), I've always been hugely bothered by the high USA drinking age and its strict enforcement. Now in real life, I would say there should be a drinking age (but NOT 21: 18 as for everything else), although I've never been to Europe but know that it doesn't destroy them not to have them-- many have none, from my understanding. I also think in real life that parents should be able to override the drinking age. As a child, my parents used to let me get drunk on New Year's Eve (but only New Years Eve) starting around when I was 12, and in my high school years allowed me to go to parties where they knew there'd likely be alcohol. As to smoking tobacco, my view is that, as with any substance, an adult has the right to choose to smoke it. Drugs were for a long time all completely legal in Likatonia, with no one contesting that. But...I see smoking tobacco as a choice that no rational person would make. I've never smoked, but of course know people who have, and the high is nowhere near what one gets from alcohol, but the long-term health consequences are much worse. And if someone wants the tobacco high so badly without ruining their lungs, they should get the nicotine gum or whatever. At bottom, I believe that tobacco companies can only gain customers by lying and manipulation, as no rational person would use tobacco. Alcohol companies may use some such tactics, but I think that drinking is not a dumb decision at all, unless you get behind the wheel of a car while drunk. I think pot smoking is a very rational decision. I don't do it (except for taking hits on precisely two occasions) due to a risk of legal consequences; but if it were legalized in the USA tomorrow, I'd use it at times. Hard stuff like cocaine, heroin, etc. is bad news for the user in general, but still I don't like that we deprive adults of the choice to use or not to use those substances. |
