Bill: Coalition of the Willing: A Word to the Wise
Details
Submitted by[?]: Commonwealth Workers Army
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: December 2366
Description[?]:
"Coalition of the Willing" legislation to present a strong, unified face. We suggest that a new national 'motto' be adopted: "Si vis pacem, para bellum", or "if you desire peace, prepare for war". It is a historical truth - those who wish peace, and liberty... will have to be prepared to defend them. |

Message | We tend to agree with the saying in question, and in fact our military policy has always been consistent with that it; we desire peace, but to achieve it we recognize that we must be prepared for war. We will vote in favor. |

Message | The phrase sounds to us like, "If you of another nation desire peace then be prepared for war from us because we don't want you to have peace." Though we are assuming it means you in the formal sense, actually meaning, "We desire peace, and as such are prepared to defend it." If the latter is what you mean to say with your new proposed motto, which I believe it is, then we also agree. |

Message | We believe an exact literal translation would come close to something like: 'if of peace, for war'. The actual original phrasing from which it is derived is: "Qui desiderat pacem, preparet bellum". (Who desires peace should prepare for war)." So - what does it 'mean'? Anything from 'you have to fight for your rights' to 'a good offense is the best defense' would be true to the spirit. Personally, the Axis Mundi Revolution likes the openness of the phrase. But, yes - the intention was something akin to the 'if someone wants peace, they might have to fight for it' intent. |

Message | There seems to be a market for the 'motto' alone, unfettered by the connection with a national name change. We push this legislation to the Convocation floor, to see it stand or fall. |
