Bill: The ways in which we manifest (three)

Submitted by[?]: Likaton Coalition of the Willing
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: May 2368
Description[?]:
The final part of the LITP election briefing We believe that law and order have broken down somewhat, and party research shows an increase in missing persons and suspicious deaths to back this up. As a consequence, we wish to extend the police department into local and national forces. We do not feel that there is a public need to be armed, and that safety is paramount. |

Message | Ack! Article 4 is really hurting this for us. (The local police forces). |
Date | 01:43:07, March 02, 2007 CET | From | Likaton Coalition of the Willing | To | Debating the The ways in which we manifest (three) |
Message | We feel that a national police force, with cross-prefecture powers, can help defend against 'big crime', whilst local forces, such as state troopers, can focus on traffic offenses and minor crimes, whilst working alongside the national force where needed. |

Message | But, tying the local police forces to local government makes no sense to us. It creates a semi-feudal scenario, where the response to crime depends on the wealth of the locals, not the threat perceived. |

Message | What a big U-Turn from the LITP on article 2. Only yestaerday they supported a single bill dealing specifically with letting the private sector set up gated communities. |

Message | Much as we are wary of the 'local police' article, we can support the balance. |

Message | We oppose Article 1 because it gives too much discretion to the police: "If THEY believe is poses a potential risk to public safety." We oppose Article 5, for what may seem an opposite reason: That an armed police force seems to us to be necessary to maintain law and order, even if we try to remove firearms from the population. We support Article 2 and Article 4, and probably, with the right description, could support Article 6 (current law allows among firearms only .32 caliber or lower handguns as well as non-automatic and non-semiautomatic hunting weapons); but if the hunting weapons could only be carried in designated hunting areas, we finally figured a reason for specific limitations on where they may be carried. On Article 3, our caucus is torn, but in the end we will side with hunters, many of whom vote for us, and state that our current limits on firearms owned by the public is enough. There is a reasonable case for it, though, we readily admit, and with our party's caucus a mix of intellectuals and labor leaders, the intellectual faction being in favor of it while laborers oppose it, how we would vote if it were in its own proposal remains uncertain. |

Message | We vote against, if for no other reason than supporting our coalition partners in the Conlibs. |
