Bill: Strike Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Green Nationalists
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: March 2086
Description[?]:
Considering the fact that every citizen has the right to fight for better conditions if they feel the urge to, every worker has the right to strike. Deprive a profession of the universal and very important right to strike is not only very unethical and dictatorial, it may also make that specific profession very impopulair. Why would a hard-working, tax-paying citizen choose a job with no social rights? Not mentioning the reaction of the labor unions... But considering the fact that the safety of our beloved Gaduridans is highly important, and that a strike of certain jobs may endanger our nation, we now state that the following jobs should provide at least a minimal service in case of a strike: - firemen - hospital workers - police - air/sea traffic controllers - power utilities - public transit workers -... ? |

Message | I think this is a fair proposal, and will probably support it (depending on the list we come up with). How do you feel about adding public transit workers to the list of essential services? When the busses and trams stop running, the city essentially shuts down and many people can't get to work or shopping. I would also suggest workers with our power utilities should have to provide a minimum service during strikes. Finally, I think we should clear up the labour status of our armed forces. I think soldiers should be the one exception to allowing anyone to form and join unions. However, if we do allow soldiers' unions, we should definitely not allow them to strike. |

Message | List updated. That soldier-union thing indeed needs a closer look. Let's keep that for an other bill. |

Message | First of all an army is not a traditional labor force, therefore unions in the army are completely pointless and could give more power to the military then is necessary for the preservation of a democratic nation. What if a rogue general spreads propoganda through the "soldier-unions" then uses that organizational structure to overthrow our democracy with the military. The military is a tool of the people and by the people for their mutual defense and under the indirect command of the people through their democratically elected government. Forget this idea of soldier unions its absolutely unnecessary and the military should not be regarded as a regular workplace. |

Message | We support this bill as is, but we will not support it if the concept of unions for the military is included. |

Message | I wasn't intending to do that. As I said: that is for another bill. |

Message | Well regardless, the concept of a labor union for the military will be rejected by us, it is not in the best interests of this nation or its people. |
Date | 18:34:30, July 24, 2005 CET | From | People's Progressive Party | To | Debating the Strike Act |
Message | You should remove soldiers from the list on this bill as they are not considered "workers" or "state employees". |

Message | Moving to vote. |
Date | 21:33:12, July 26, 2005 CET | From | Classical Progressives | To | Debating the Strike Act |
Message | I wold disagree with any proposal that would give the military the right to unionize. But as it stands we support this bill, and will vote in support of it. While we do reserve the right to act against any bill that we feel would hamper the abilities of buisnesses to provide their own services and goods to the people. |

Random fact: It is not allowed to call more than 5 elections in 5 game years in a nation. The default sanction for a player persisting in the early election tactic will be a seat reset. |
