Bill: GM Food Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: United Blobs

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2116

Description[?]:

A recent survey of Hobrazians (http://82.238.75.178:8085/particracy/main/viewnews.php?newsid=3669) has shown that a majority wish for all GM related activity to be legal. This act will do that but make it so that GM foods must be clearly labelled (as with pesticide containing foods) so that people can choose whether to buy them or not.

For GM food to be sold and/or produced it must be from crops that have been shown to be safe to both the environment and to humans and animals that consume them. Any that do not meet these criteria may not be sold in any Hobrazian store.

MessageBut only a few years ago your party voted to ban them? You said you would change this once significant evidence proving their safety is seen, but so far i haven't seen any.

Everything isn't totally governed by public opinion you know.

MessageHow about this quote - "I would allow selling as consumers may wish to buy them. These would, of course, be clearly labelled as GM crops in a similar way to those using pesticides so that customers are fully aware of what they are buying." Basically what this bill offers. The current regulations were preferable to none and if you read the bill only safe GM crops will be allowed to be grown and sold. Of course the opinion poll helped...

MessageSo does this bill allow the selling of unproven or unafe GM products as long as it's labeled as a GM product. Or is the ban still in place for unsafe GM products?

MessageThe ban's still in place. It just allows specific ones to be sold once proven to be safe. Hopefully the new wording makes it clearer.

MessageIf they are unsafe then this law would make them illegal. Otherwise I don't see your problem.

MessageAt present, even with the recent survey, we see no requirement to modify the existing laws.

MessageIf there proven to be safe then why not allow them to be sold and labeled as GM so people are aware.

MessageBecause I have yet to see any research labelling them as safe.

MessageHow would we know if it was really safe? They will have to be tested first, and we have plenty of animals around...JK
