Bill: IP Military Reform Act
Details

Status[?]: defeated

Voting deadline: September 2380
Description[?]:
I know I have recently proposed a very similar act that was voted down, but it was not debated, and a lot of people abstained. I have stated my arguments for these three principles before: 1. We need an intelligence agency capable of dealing in other countries. For starters, if there is a war, we would surely want to engage in a number of actions beyond mere counter-measures against our opponents. Under the present regime, our spies can merely engage in surveillance. Yes, we can change the law during a conflict - but that will cost us months. Further, intelligence operations are often very complex, and may require advance planning. Intelligence operations will still be governed by the best check of all: namely that they are controlled by the civilian government. This will prevent abuses. 2. Research of biological weapons is necessary for research of cures and counter-measures. Furthermore, these technologies have a dual-use property and can benefit our biotech industries. Many great discoveries were made by accident (eg. synthetic dyes). 3. Arms exports to our allies strengthen us by strengthening our friends, provide good-paying jobs to our workers, and give our arms industry something to do during peacetime, so that in the case of war, we have a viable defence industry. 4. I don't see how we lose by allowing a private defence industry to exist. They will provide us with more military innovations over the long run, and excess productive capacity in the case of a war. I am not an idealogue when it comes to free markets or big government. Some problems may require large amounts of up-front capital and a long-term perspective that only the government can address. In other instances, however, competition can stimulate innovation and price reductions. Lets enjoy the best of both worlds by allowing a private defence industry. |
