Bill: GM Foods Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Liberal Imperialist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2087
Description[?]:
Recognising that Genetically Modified Foods promise a series of wide ranging benefits for human kind, for instance being able to grow food in previously unsuitable areas, and being able to produce more food to a specific area of land (thereby reducing the amount of land which must be cleared for farming), and also recognising that there is no scientific evidence that GM Foods are dangerous, and also noting that humans have been growing GM foods by selective breeding for thousands of years already, the Liberal Imperialist Party introduces the following bill to allow the sale of GM food, but still allowing people who do not want to eat GM food the choice of not doing so via stringently regulated labelling of foods containing GM products. ADDENDUM Under this act GM crops must be subject to a scientific study which must then report that they are safe for human consumption and the environment before they can be grown commercially. |

Message | 1 - farmers that choose not to switch on GM crops are at a disadvantage because they produce less. 2 - by genetically modifying crops the DNA of the crops will grow more and more alike, which means that one single disease could whipe out an entire agricultural sector and could mean famine. 3 - GM organisms damage the environment. 4 - the current scientific knowledge of genetic modification is not that far advanced, so one mistake in a laboratory might go unnoticed and farmers could be growing deadly crops. That's why more research (as provided for under current legislation) is necessary. |

Message | "and also recognising that there is no scientific evidence that GM Foods are dangerous" But there is also no scientific evidence that they are safe, we must be absolutely 100% sure they are safe before even considering allowing them. |

Message | "1 - farmers that choose not to switch on GM crops are at a disadvantage because they produce less." No they arent, because they can label their food as being GM free and people like that sort of thing. Even if this wasnt the case, I dont see why we should be holding back science just to protect people who cant be bothered to move with the times. How will society every advance that way? "2 - by genetically modifying crops the DNA of the crops will grow more and more alike, which means that one single disease could whipe out an entire agricultural sector and could mean famine." No it doesnt, because only specific genes are being changed. There isnt any effect to other genes, only ones concerning yield and hardiness. "3 - GM organisms damage the environment." Do they? Errr... how? "4 - the current scientific knowledge of genetic modification is not that far advanced, so one mistake in a laboratory might go unnoticed and farmers could be growing deadly crops. That's why more research (as provided for under current legislation) is necessary." Would you support the bill if it included an addendum that said that crops had to be cleared by the government before being sold commercially? That's better than just outright banning them indefiantely. No one is going to bother researching things if they know that they arent going to be able to recoup their vast research costs (and you said you were pro science). |

Message | I'd rather have a slightly differend addendum: "Under this act GM crops must be subject to a scientific study which must then report that they are safe for human consumption and the environment before they can be grown commercially." |
