Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

We believe that prisoners should be allowed to contribute to society by working for the society on a voluntary basis, and be paid a minimum wage for their work. This would also help rehabilitate them, by allowing them to further themselves.

MessageWe will not vote to accept prison labour unless prisoners are paid union scale.

MessageWe agree with this. Prisoners currently get no wage and no chances to prove themselves as productive members of society. This gives them that chance, as well as paying them for it. We are firmly in favour of this.

MessageThat is a matter for another bill. For the moment the important part is paying them and allowing them to work.

MessageThere is no such thing as "voluntary work" in prisons. Prison is an inherently coercive environment. Forcing some people (prisoners) to work for minimum wage is not only unfair; it also undermines wages for the rest of us.
