Bill: IP Absolute Right to Free Speech
Details
Submitted by[?]: Imperialist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: February 2399
Description[?]:
We are either all free, or none of us are free. That is why I propose a range of reforms to strengthen free expression in Telamon. Firstly, the present regime dealing with pornography is, in fact, generating taboos about sexuality that lead to problems. While some may argue that pornography objectifies women, I disagree. Women choose to work in the porn industry - if the government bans pornography it is also restricting the choices of women, and deciding, paternally, for women what they can do about their body. Secondly, present restrictions on the desecration of the flag are ridiculous. The non-use of the flag for commercial purposes means that I can't sell flags at national festivals, or say, exercise my patriotic duty by buying Telamon flag boxer shorts. Finally, it is a dangerous line to allow the government to determine what is false, and what is not. The "truth" may be that the government is doing a good job. |

Message | While you point out valid things, each has its downside. The national flag could be marketed to the point that it is meaningless, the laws about freedom of speech encourage capitalist propaganda, and on the laws on prostitution and pornography; what some women do with their body will affect all other women, so a small minority of women could hold back the vast majority. I must vote no. |
