Bill: Civil Defense Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: New Democratic Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: May 2416

Description[?]:

This bill will establish shelters for UKL citizens, should an attack take place.

Given the recently passed legislation limiting our use of nuclear weapons as a first strike weapon, it is imperative that we begin to defend ourselves peaceably. Building shelters throughout the nation, along with efforts by the National Space Program to defend our citizens, will help us all sleep better at night.

MessageInitially we were against this, it only adds to government control. But the NDP has a point, now we HAVE to be attacked first. We should make every effort to preserve our population.

MessageIs there a reason why local governments cannot do this? What if we gave them the same money it would take for the national government to set them up?

MessageI was under the impression that these new national ones would be created and maintained in addition to the ones already constructed by the local governments. But it leaves no room for local governments to continue to provide them. good point LDP.

MessageWe also assumed that local governments could continue to build or maintain shelters. Certainly, private citizens and businesses have the ability to protect themselves; we saw this as an opportunity for those unable to afford or access shelters to have equal protection. We've spoken recently about the need to protect civilians in the case of nuclear attacks or bombings. This seemed like the perfect opportunity.

The NDP also regrets putting this issue to a vote with limited time for debate, but the URP has forced us into this position by introducing a bill dealing with the same issue. The URP, unfortunately, doesn't seem to value discourse or the exchange of ideas as much as the New Democratic Party; they put their bill to a vote with no time for debate.
