| Message | There is no doubt that prostitution is a menace but outlawing it would be to encourage an unregulated, unchecked and unhealthy market and would lead the way for "revolving door" imprisonment of some of the most vulnerable people in society. I propose eliminating the customer base for prostitutes in future legislation by making it illegal to be a customer, but to adopt a compassionate approach to the question of prostitution by allowing it to be legal. This "Swedish model" approach has proven to be successful in that the human trafficking, drug crime and underage sex which goes hand in hand with legalization is eliminated and the mistreatment of vulnerable people and spread of STDs which accompanies criminality is too avoided. With no customer base, gangsters will no longer seek to exploit prostitutes and gradually the prostitutes themselves will decline in numbers. As things stand, we should keep the current law and in future table proposals to make it illegal to become the customer of a prostitute. |
