Bill: Smoking Legalization Bill

Details

Submitted by[?]: Anarchist Liberation Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2437

Description[?]:

In this great nation, we have a certain amount of pride for the civil liberties afforded to our citizens. We can look to other nations and think ourselves somewhat more progressive, as we allow such freedoms as women and homosexuals in the military, the use of cannabis, and euthanasia. We trust our citizens to make proper choices, yet we do not allow a market for tobacco in this country. Why is this? Not only would tobacco deepen our economy, but it is, for many, a relaxing, social habit. Certainly we can make our citizens aware of the potential dangers, but in this nation, how can we allow ourselves to make such decisions for our populous? I propose we move decision-making on this matter towards local governments. These smaller cells will better understand the particular needs of their community, while allowing smoking to flourish in areas where it is most desired. Furthermore, the economic benefits will almost assuredly be further-spread than the actual habit of smoking, as even places where smoking is banned can still operate tobacco industries for those places it is in demand.

MessageYes, smoking is addictive. But why do you demand that the government take power AWAY from the poor (power to make their own decisions, to be independent agents) under the guise of doing them favors? It's abhorrent.

MessageAdditionally, let it be noted that the bill merely decentralizes the decision-making process. It does not necessitate making smoking legal.

MessageDo you have statistics on that, or are you just talking?

Again, note that local governments can still ban smoking. And consider the new jobs created for the less fortunate in our nation.

MessageSo you're admitting that you'd rather have our impoverished on the dole than working? Isn't it best for the nation if people have jobs? I'm in favor of welfare, for sure, but to recommend it OVER a minimum wage job is crazy.

I didn't ask for the chemical process, which I'm aware of, I asked for statistics on HOW MUCH pollution is throw off, as in, if it's a significant amount.

MessageNothing in that link is about environmental pollution and smoking. You're just saying nothing.

I know how welfare works, the question is: Shouldn't we encourage those on welfare to seek work? It would put money in the coffers of Kazulia (We'd have a growing economy and have less people to pay on the dole). You said "welfare is almost as much as minimum wage" as though that's an excuse to encourage people to stay on it. We need a robust welfare system, but part of that contract ought to be that we encourage those ON welfare to find work!

What are you misunderstanding here?

Smoking, the environment and meningococcal disease: a case control study.
[My paper] R E Stanwell-Smith , J M Stuart , A O Hughes , P Robinson , M B Griffin , K Cartwright
This case control study investigated environmental factors in 74 confirmed cases of meningococcal disease (MD). In children aged under 5, passive smoking in the home (30 or more cigarettes daily) was associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 7.5 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.46-38.66). ORs increased both with the numbers of cigarettes smoked and with the number of smokers in the household, suggesting a dose-response relationship. MD in this age group was also significantly associated with household overcrowding (more than 1.5 persons per room) (OR 6.0, 95% CI 1.10-32.8), with kisses on the mouth with 4 or more contacts in the previous 2 weeks (OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.09-5.56), with exposure to dust from plaster, brick or stone in the previous 2 weeks (OR 2.24, 95% CI 1.07-4.65); and with changes in residence (OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.0-8.99), marital arguments (OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.26-7.17) and legal disputes in the previous 6 months (OR 3.10, 95% CI 1.24-7.78). These associations were independent of social class. Public health measures to lower the prevalence of cigarette smoking by parents of young children may reduce the incidence of MD. The influence of building dust and stressful life events merits further investigation.

MessageThat study was about PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN. Why ban everyone from smoking due to that finding?

So, if most industry is owned by the state, why would the tobacco industry be different? Let the state control it and pay workers a hefty wage!
