Bill: Treatment of POWs
Details
Submitted by[?]: Free Lodamun
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: May 2438
Description[?]:
This case has been made before. Currently, the rules of Lodamun do not allow for extraordinary circumstances in regards to getting information from enemy combatants. We adhere to internationally set standards. In the event of a slip up of an officer in charge or the need for speedy information outweighing human rights, we find ourselves to be liable on an international scale. By changing our stance to POWs are treated according to our laws, not only do we have plausible deniability when it comes to a slip up on human rights, but we give ourselves a powerful tool. One that HAS to be used sparingly and only in times of extreme duress, but a tool nonetheless. Also, please keep in mind that this does not sanction torture, far from it. Torturers are still vulnerable to legal action under this option. |

Message | At the risk of sacrificing some national sovereignty, there is more benefit to complying to international standards in the long run than risking international criticism. International trade does not operate within a vacuum: foreign investors will be more than eager to look at our image first before economic viability. |

Message | You know the NP agrees with this. |

Message | International criticism is exactly what we're trying to avoid with this. Currently, we have to treat POWs however the community at large tells us to treat them. This does not cover every contingency. Should the need arise to violate that agreement, we not only mishandled a forgeign national, we went back on our word to the international comunity. By holding to our own standards, the consequences for such an event with be muted. We'll still have to deal with that prisoner's government but the international community can do little but protest because we did not violate any agreement with them. |

Message | The need for security makes this a wise proposal. We are in full support. |
Date | 18:51:45, August 01, 2007 CET | From | Lodamun Autonomous Republican Party | To | Debating the Treatment of POWs |
Message | We are in full support as well; by following international standards we are giving up part of our precious freedom to governments not elected by our people. Allowing other countries to dictate our actions is tantamount to allowing them to rule us. |

Message | This bill is insane. Most other nations accept inernational standards. We should not relegate Lodamun to the Terra's fringe. |

Message | So apparently our own laws aren't good enough and we're on the fringe? That is an interesting position to take considering the URP has been in power for decades. This merely allows us to cover all contingencies, something our current law does not. |

Message | ...like plausible deniability. FL has no decency. |
Date | 21:57:24, August 01, 2007 CET | From | Free Lodamun | To | Debating the Treatment of POWs |
Message | Currently, our nation forbids torture for any reason so this legislation not only doesn't endanger anyone but allows Lodamun to stand on our own on the international stage. Once again, Free Lodamun stands exposed by urp's personal attacks. We shall try to appear more decent in the future by not presenting legislation that both doesn't hurt the status quo and saves Lodamun from a future international incident. We shall try harder in the future. |
Date | 03:17:38, August 02, 2007 CET | From | Independent Republican Party | To | Debating the Treatment of POWs |
Message | Why can't we just follow international standards and treat POWs accordingly? What's wrong with preventing inhumane torture? |
Date | 07:53:49, August 02, 2007 CET | From | United Republics Party | To | Debating the Treatment of POWs |
Message | The only international incident would be the passage of this bill. |
