Message | With respect to Article 2: Say Gevaro is generating 100 MW of power more than it needs because there are too many base load generators online. The plants can't be shut down - it takes at least 24 hours to bring a coal plant online, more for nuclear - so what's to be done? Sure, Gevaro could burn it off by using pumping water from a dam up (in preparation for when demand exceeds supply) to a storage tank but they'd probably rather sell it off to someone else and try to make back some of their losses. Say Lindar Valley is 200 MW short of demand. LV could either fire up some hydro generators (they can come online in ninety seconds) or it could buy (part of) the missing power from Gevaro. If Gevaro is going to otherwise waste their power, their prices will be low. Lindar Valley may find it more economical to buy their power rather than fire up the hydro plants (engineers don't work for free, you know). But they can't. Gevaro wastes the power, Lindar generates more than necessary and expends more resources than is necessary in the process. Why? Because some federalist fundamentalist decided ideology was more important than the obvious benefits of grid interconnection. |
