Message | This is central government interference in local affairs. It is also robbing the working people of one state to provide for the idle elite in another. |

Message | Are yo usaying that the idle elite are the only people who actually use libraries? |

Message | No. I am saying that the idle elite are those that make the most use of libraries. They have to be idle to have the time, and they would be the elite on the basis of their preference of the library over the bar or sports ground, or cybercafe. Thus additional funding for libraries benefits most that sector of the public that contribute least, directly that is, to our economy. |

Message | ((Maybe it's just where I live, but the idle elite are the ones that use the library least. It's the immigrants, students and average working class people that use the library.)) |

Message | ((It may well be just where you live. Where I live the only people who use the library are the idle rich. It probably depends on the degree of development of the country, and looking at the indices of Lodamun for industry and agriculture, we are a developing nation not an OECD one.) |
Date | 17:36:06, August 12, 2005 CET | From | Cooperative Commonwealth Federation | To | Debating the Power to the States VII |
Message | as long as control remains in the hands of state governments, we would have no objection to libraries receiving funding from the central government, which after all has far greater powers of taxation and thus far higher revenues. We would like to see the additional funds be directed into such things as making free computer terminals available in libraries, opening them up to community meetings and screenings of educaitonal films from throughout Lodamun, a focus on lending video and audio as well as written materials, and other mechanisms to tranform libraries into centres for the entire community. All this while not forgetting the provision of books to all comers free of charge, the basic function of a library. |

Message | I personally consider the status of libraries to be of concern for all the nation and so therefore I support this Bill. National government should show that it is willing to put money into establishments that encourage learning and scholarship. |
