Bill: Religion Registration Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Bull Moose Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2448
Description[?]:
Too many of our businesses and citizens are being unfairly taken advantage of by these "unlicensed" religions. Frequently started as tax dodges, these splinter cults are using their quasi-religious existence to justify their tax-avoidant "non-profit" status. We propose that a registry of religious organizations is to be established to fully analyze these religious entities, appropriately tax the organizations deemed to be religious entities and disallow cults set up as tax dodges. This proposal will reduce tax avoidant-strain on our system while also allowing true religions to flourish. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change Government policy concerning religions.
Old value:: There is no government policy concerning a state religion.
Current: There is an official state religion, but membership is completely voluntary.
Proposed: There is no official state religion, but the government only allows recognized religions. 'Cults' are persecuted.

Message | Well, not only is it the spelling off, but religions are currently taxed like corporations, in accordance with a bill we introduced. So it would be quite misguided to set up a religion as a tax dodge. Therefore, this act is not only oppressively intrusive into our citizens' rights to worship whatever stupid crap they'd like to, it is also completely pointless. |

Message | Even though our current tax structure taxes religions as corporations, if that religion purports to be a non-profit organization, they are still tax exempt. Note the "appropriately tax the organizations deemed to be religious entities and disallow cults set up as tax dodges. " clause. |

Message | No, it's not that they aren't taxed if they are non-profit. The charitable branch of a religion is untaxed, i.e. when they are giving the money away. Therefore, if these "cults" are set up in order to dodge taxes, they will have to be giving all that untaxed money away to charitable organizations. We already regulate this, and we're pretty sure this bill is just a foot in the door towards a state religion. |
