Message | We feel the merits of this bill are self evident, as is the reasoning behind it. GIven that schooling is entirely free in Malivia, it is hardly unfair to call upon our citizens to give back upon completion of either high school or college. Those with a moral objection to military service, or who simply don't like the haircuts and early mornings, can elect to serve in some capacity in a social service administered or approved of by the government. This can include a number of professions, such as social work, teaching, nursing, medicine etc, or working for a government recognized charity. |

Message | We find this an excellent proposal and will support. |

Message | I'm not so sure about the "lesser paid" aspect. |
Date | 22:19:03, August 15, 2005 CET | From | Leviathan Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | Considering that the govenment is already on the verge of guaranteeing a basic standard of living, through subsidized housing and telephone access, free healthcare and the soon to pass guaranteed income, we are not concerned with the lesser paid aspect in the least. If nothing else, as noted, our citizens are repaying the benefits they've enjoyed by living in Malivia. In that vein, what are thoughts on requiring national service of immigrants of a certain age? |

Message | We see no need for mandatory service. A large number of citizens are employed by the government or in socially-owned industries in any case, so they're already repaying what they've received. |

Message | I think this should be for citizens only. |
Date | 02:02:18, August 17, 2005 CET | From | Leviathan Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | Current Malivian law allows anyone in the country to asset citizenship, which is why we asked the question: if an immigrant becomes a Malivian, do they have to fulfill this obligation? |

Message | if this passes, and we are leaning against at this time, immigrants attending more then 3 yrs of schooling in our system should be included. As for our support on this we are currently against, since a) people should not be forced to work for anyone b) we do not want people in the military unless they want to join. c) this will cut into the demand for those wishing to nurse/teach/etc for a living |
Date | 02:00:43, August 18, 2005 CET | From | Social Republican Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | Our position: Pro: it allows citizens to give something back to our nation Con: it limits the freedoms of certain relgious beliefs, which are inherantly pacifist. So we are neutral. And the Levaithan Party's statement as to "those who dont like the haircuts" is inherantly unaware of our nations military past. Our soldiers have always had long hair, and only are forced to cut it as a punishment. |
Date | 09:28:35, August 18, 2005 CET | From | Leviathan Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | First, this does not discriminate against anyone who objects to military service because, as noted, anyone can opt for servince a field that provides a social service. |
Date | 17:21:39, August 18, 2005 CET | From | Protectorate Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | commenting on the SRP's "it allows citizens to give something back to our nation" : they are not giving anything to the nation rather the government is forcing them. A gift cannot be done at the point of a gun. Those wishing to give to our nation should be allowed to do so freeely, those who do not can be encouraged but not forced. |
Date | 19:25:53, August 18, 2005 CET | From | Leviathan Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | We suppose the PP is against schools requiring high school seniors to perform community service as a graduation requirement? A culture of service and obligation is something we should actively inculcate in our citizens, and national service will be an excellent way for recent high school and college graduates to get real world experience and give something back. |
Date | 21:30:55, August 18, 2005 CET | From | Protectorate Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | yes we are. As we have stated it should be encouraged, but not forced. |
Date | 21:31:46, August 18, 2005 CET | From | Protectorate Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | We are against forcing inmates to work, yet we feel it is ok to do to our free citizens? |
Date | 04:14:51, August 19, 2005 CET | From | Leviathan Party | To | Debating the National Service |
Message | Requiring someone provide, say, a year or two of national service, in the field of their choice, while they are free to go home and enjoy the freedoms provided to citizens is a far cry from forced labor in a prison. What is ultimatley important to us is creating a culture in Malivia that inculcates a sense of service in our citizens, and by defining national service as part of our duties as citizens goes a long way to creating the positive behavior we want in our youngest citizens. |

Random fact: In Culturally Protected nations, special care must be taken to ensure realism is maintained when role-playing a government controlled by an ethnic and/or religious minority. If it is to be supposed that this government is supported by a majority of the population, then this should be plausibly and sufficiently role-played. The burden of proof is on the player or players role-playing such a regime to demonstrate that it is being done realistically |
