Message | Maybe ironically to some, banning late term abortions was DRs first legislative accomplishment. We oppose now as we supported the law banning late term abortions before. As the fetus develops greater capacity for suffering, so does its moral status relative to a mother's interests in medical privacy. By the third trimester (really earlier), scientific evidence shows that fetuses have sufficient nerve endings and neural capacity to experience pain nearly as fully as an adult human. Moreover, except in cases of medical emergency in which the life or physical health of the mother are seriously threatened by carrying a pregnancy to term, we'd likewise argue that although the mother's interest in medical privacy has not diminished by the third trimester, her claim that she has not had the opportunity to exercise private medical decision making has. Therefore, the balance of the values of preventing needless fetal suffering versus protecting womens' medical privacy weighs in favor the fetus by the third trimester. [OOC: We'd support an exception to the late term abortion ban for abortions done to preserve the life or physical health of the mother. But the game doesn't give that option that I know of. /OOC] |
