Bill: To remove any religious connotations from our Leadership.

Details

Submitted by[?]: Likaton Coalition of the Willing

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2464

Description[?]:

Whilst we accept that the Emmisary is traditionally, the Emmissary of the people, we feel that, in these modern times, the role may be misinterpreted, and its title misrepresented, or even manipulated by foreign media.

We suggest a new descriptor, more in keeping with our belief in the equality of all Likatonians.

MessageWhile we embrace forward-thinking gestures such as this...

'First Citizen' carries a connotation that not all Likatonian citizens are equal - that one is more important than others.

Historically, 'Emissary' has described what our Head of State 'does'... the Likatonian Head of State office has conventionally been a largely symbolic role, primarily concerned with representing Likatonia in other nations. The Emissary has always been the Emissary of the Convocation.

MessageIt's quite scary to the AM SuDP that this was quite so successful. Okay, THIS time it failed to garner enough votes to pass, but it managed to capture the imagination of more than half of the Convocation, and of almost half of the active parties.

We, persoanlly, have such problems with the inherent assertion of superiority/inferiority inherent in the concept of a 'first' citizen, that we honestly cannot see why this particular gesture was so popular.

If anyone can enlighten us, we'd be appreciative.
