Bill: Energy Bill of 2099

Details

Submitted by[?]: Liberal-Progressive Union

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2100

Description[?]:

This bill allows private industry to provide energy. These private indutries are regulated by the government which determine how much these companies can charge to prevent exploitation of these companies of it's customers. The energy industry is also a very big job provider and would help ease unemployment. The government reserves the right to take control of these industries during a case of a natural disaster, wartime, acts of sabotage, and other serious events were the production of energy must continue. A government agency known as the Hobrazian Department of Energy will be setup to ensure that these private companies are not in complete control of the energy policy, and to ensure proper environmental and work conditions.

MessageThis a nice balance between complete government control, and complete privitization. Also the revenues from the taxes these companies will pay is a great source of income.

MessageThis seems fair enough, although perhaps there should be a clause allowing the government to take strategic control of power stations in case of national emergency?

MessageGood point. During a natural disaster or war for example to ensure they continue to operate.

MessageTo be honest, the choice we would ideally want is not included in the options.
We will admit to having a few concerns with this only due to the fact that allowing private control of the nations infrastructure (and power genration is a crucial part of it) can be risky. Though we are happy to see that the L-PU is regulating the cost, we still feel it is of concern to allow private companies to control the way in which power is generated within the Country... we will consider our position.

MessageThats true. I could add a clause stating the government can dictate which power is generated as suitable for that region. They government can set up some kind of energy commision to oversee these companies and prevent the private industry from having total control. Something like the Hobrazian Department of Energy will be a watchdog type group.

MessageThough, as pointed out by the USM, we would be more in favour of a State operated system, this proposal is far better than the existing position, as such we support.
