Message | p.s. (I had thought the "telephone service free of charge" had been revoked when I wrote this, but it is still active. There fore consider this to be an extension of that service, an update of the phones if you will ;) |

Message | The people are paying for them, if not directly then through their taxes. I would imagine that this is part of the PPPs self-declared program of mass-surveillance. There's no such thing as a free lunch. |

Message | sure, but what better reason to sacrifice liberty than for security? ;P |

Message | Any society that would sacrifice a little liberty for security deserves neither, and would lose them both. OOC: Anyone want to guess where the quote comes from? (I'm assuming the PPP knows, since they referenced it first) |

Message | ooc: it is normally attributed to Ben Franklin, but he probably didn't say it. Instead it seems to be a political slogan of the american revolutionaries, and as such has a large number of variations. Franklin probably said something similar a time or three, but there is no record of him having said it AFAIK. |

Message | ooc: It's a reduction of a much larger statement made in one of his speeches. Most quotes are different in the original, due to shifts in syntax and grammar over hundreds of years. I believe Mao's "out of a gun-barrel" quote is phrased somewhat different in reality as well (not to mention in a different language). |

Message | ooc: mao seems like a pretty cool guy right up until the time he took over China. His political / military victory strategy was superb. |

Message | ooc: from what I have read he emphasized humane conduct by his soldiers towards the peasants in order to encourage recruits. Very likable, that. |

Message | ooc: Actually, if the source material is reliable, it seems quite the opposite. Especially during the time of the first Red State (circa 1930), Mao seemed to prefer violence - especially towards those who were class enemies. It seems that the qualifications to be declared a 'kulak' or a landlord were expanded quite a bit due to China's rural poverty. |
Date | 17:42:52, November 19, 2007 CET | From | People's Populist Party - Zogist Mafia | To | Debating the Free cell-phones! |
Message | ooc: AFAIK that was a political purge in response to opposition to his leadership, not just an aimless slaughter of peasants. |
Date | 20:15:29, November 19, 2007 CET | From | Beluzian Workers Party | To | Debating the Free cell-phones! |
Message | ooc: Mao never had an aversion to violence as a political tool - it was his terror campaigns that solidified his hold over the people. I'm not sure he would have considered it aimless to strike fear in the populace. |
