MessageAbsolutely not acceptable. Abortions are sometimes necessary. It is the position that the procedure should be safe, legal, and rare. This is an invasion of privacy as it intrudes upon a woman's body and her right to do what she feels is best for herself.

MessageDuring the first trimester all human organs are developed, why can we kill someone that is not yet 3 months old but we can't kill someone who is more than 3 months old?

MessageI believe we voted in favor of the bill that restricted abortion to the first trimester due to another proposal within the bill, but SocLib '82 does not support restrictions on abortion generally.

The argument one could make is that a fetus during the first trimester is developing and is not yet in human form. It has human DNA and components, but it is not yet fully formed and thus is subject to termination if life conditions prove too difficult for the child to be raised in a safe, humane way. As a car is not a car without a steering wheel and a frame, a zygote is not yet a human person. The debate over when life begins is age-old, and we feel that it is not one that can be settled by government regulation. Rather, individual women will have to make that difficult choice for themselves and their possible offspring.

MessageThe argument that an unborn fetus is not yet a full human being has the problem that a fetus is at least the possibility of becoming a fully grown human being and that this has to be respected. This objection again has the a problem that may be called "Prince Charles-argument": Prince Charles is possible king of the United Kingdom but that doesn't give him the right to sign documents or ennoble people as king.

Certainly, things are far more difficult and delicate when we are talking about abortions and the value or sanctity of life. In jewish thought an unborn fetus is part of the mother's body until the baby is born. Of course, abortion is unnatural and kind of a perversion of nature. But still certain situations make an abortion necessary or at least the best solution for all. I don't want to force a victim of a rape to give birth to and raise the product of the traumatizing crime...

MessageWe commend this legislation in the strongest terms. Those who promote abortion will have to answer to the Lord.
