Bill: Religious Moderation Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Saiserist League

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 2494

Description[?]:

"We of the Revolutionary Socialist Party have no intention of infringing on freedom of religion, but when that freedom begins to pose a threat to others it has become excessive. All we are striving for today is the granting to the State the right to prevent any excessively zealous religious appointments, for the ministers of religion hold significant power over their people that transcends legislated law. I pray this power need never be used, but in the interest of protecting Zardugal's citizens it must be present. Better to allow the government some authority than to permit a fanatic to order his flock to blow up properties or other people. I implore you all to support this bill."

-Daniel Vladimirovich Feterokov, in the proposition speech to the National Directory

Message"Instead of meddling with other individuals beliefs, the LP would prefer to cement civil liberties into law. Besides, this approach is impossible to enforce. A religious leader does not need an official appointment to influence the masses. In fact, if the State were to use this power, religious zealously and support for the Minister-to-be would soar."

Message"What the Liberty Party, and all other anti-people and anti-worker parties, should try to understand is that religious ministers cannot get their message out unless they are given a platform to do so. It only makes sense to grant the State the power to block giving a platform to a misogynistic homophobic hatemonger or fearmonger for them to broadcast their messages of hate, which may well find some appeal in the masses and drive their followers to implement their wishes regardless of other laws in place to prevent such a tragedy. The State is not even taking away a civil libery with this act."

MessageThe state shouldn't have the power to intervene with religious processes (except in terrorist cases, but terrorism still wouldn't be stopped by vetoing minister appointments,....)

Message"It is the opinion of Comrade-Chairman Feterokov and Comrade von Friedricht that vetoing minister appointments will indeed curb terrorism, that is the entire theory behind the bill. If a zealot is to be appointed to a high ministerial position, which is far more possible than most of us fine Zardugalis would like to admit, it immediatey grants him or her a position of immense respectability, immense resources, and an unchecked ability to broadcast his or her hateful and dangerous views throughout all of Terra. If that is not conducive to terrorism, myself and all fine comrades of the Revolutionary Socialist Party are at a loss for what is."
