Bill: Media Liberation Package

Details

Submitted by[?]: Saiserist League

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: June 2496

Description[?]:

"Now is the time for the corporate tyranny of our nation's media to finally end. Large corporations that control the media are far too content to warp the truth in order to spread fear, make infotainment out of the news, warp the truth still further to promote the interests of parties that help them stay in their vice-grip over the media, promote disgusting, violent, and grotesquely sexual pop culture purely to increase viewer ratings and sell cheap products. I, for one, am sick of it. Now we do not propose bringing them under state control, for that, though well-intentioned, could ultimately lead to tyranny of a different kind. Instead, why not promote non-profit making cooperatives, who have no other interest than to provide the best possible media programming to the people of Zardugal? Make the right decision, thank you for your time."

-Daniel V. Feterokov, Chairman of the Revolutionary Socialist Party

Message"Whilst we respect our allies of the Left Wing, namely the esteemed Irish Party and National Authoritarian Movement, and possibly the Rald Party though we are not certain of their positions yet, and can establish that we all agree on basic principles, wish to know why they cling to the vestiges of a system they can recognize as deeply flawed. In this case in particular, why is corporate domination and monopoly over the media preferable to independent ownership who are not motivated by sheer profit? We mean no disrespect to our political allies by this, we are merely curious and genuinely wish to know the motivations behind their vote. We, and I, though, must commend the National Authoritarian Movement for passing the previous legislation that created the improvement in the media we currently have over the previous completely corporate system."

Message"But surely if the government runs the media, doesn't it make it all too possible for the government to censure the media? That's the flaw of your system, Mr. Dunikov. The Rald Party will support you on the bills that we think are wise and not support you on those bills that we think are foolish."

MessageYou talk about a monopoly by the corporate giants, but this will create a worse kind of monopoly. This makes it far too easy for the Government (which at the moment is the capitalists....) to censor anything and everything that goes out into the public.
Aswell as that, the citizens deserve choice.

Message"The extremists believe that they can prevent corruption in the government by giving it the power to control the media. They've also expressed their disgust at the programming Zardugalies like to watch. They're sick of it.

Well, I'm sick of them. I'm just happy to see that even their closest political have abandoned them in their latest effort to turn the society of individuals that make up Zardugal into one collective, controlled by the State."

Message"There is a certain flaw in the understanding of this bill by the other parties. What Comrade Dunikov, and this bill, are trying to do is no to grant the government control over the media (that would mean nationalization of the networks) but rather to make them independent and fair. Even the Revolutionary Socialists don't believe the government should control the media. 'The State' has nothing to do with this, and one should take note of the bill's wording. The government subsidies are solely so these cooperatives can function, because obviously without funding there would be no programming at all, which is sadly the normal fall-down for non-profit organizations. Some common sense is required here."

Random fact: Cabinet ministers who disagree seriously with the head of government would usually be expected to resign. Parties within the cabinet may attempt to manoeuvre to replace the head of government though, for example by proposing a new cabinet bill or voting for an early election.

Random quote: "Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the US media." - Noam Chomsky
