Bill: FDP 002: Media Reform
Details
Submitted by[?]: Free Democratic Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: March 2512
Description[?]:
To ensure that money from taxpayers is spent appropriately on worthy goals we propose: An end to the subsidisation of a television and radio channel for "information" and "educational" purposes. If there is a need for these types of channels, the private sector will provide them. Notice the popularity of the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and other such channels. Furthermore, to counteract the inevitable argument for them on the basis of political independence, when has an institution, that relies solely on the government of the day's backing for its continued existance, ever been politicalyl neutral? Is this Government so obtuse as to believe that Sekowoans cannot distinguish between fact and biased opinion? The private sector will provide a range of options, and furthermore, will provide a neutral option if that is what the people of Sekowo want. |

Message | While private media stations that focus on educational and science minded content to exist, they also tend to end up focusing more on shows that while are technically educational, are more geared towards entertainment. Further more the stations in question also act as political and government information sources, that is they provide information about current legislation (ala C-SPAN) and the views of varying government officials. This has also been historically the balance struck between the two major sides in Sekowo of Socialists/Communists and Libertarians. |

Message | If we voted yes, this bill would pass. As it is, we do not yet see a need to eliminate this element of our government. However, we would be willing to trade votes at some other critical point in time with the PSFVP or USMC for our support (and thus the passing of the bill) here. |
