Bill: OOC: what country is Lodamun like? (archive, vote no)

Details

Submitted by[?]: Cooperative Commonwealth Federation

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2122

Description[?]:

Discussion in the monarchy bill suggests we need some sort of consensus on this. The options seem to be:

- a European-style country, like Britain
- a New Worldy country of settlement with indigenous people of lower socio-economic status, like Peru or Mexico
- an Asian-style country, like China (which lends itslef to more state-by-state diversity than the Europe model)

Messageour RP'ed history has included (not to say everyone has agreed to all this, just that these things have been assumed by one or more players):
- diverse languages for each state
- mention of indigenous minorities who might be less modern than the majority
- presumption of an open/multicultural society, given a century of undisputed easy immigration
- tropical jungle areas
- a high average standard of living (?)
- mostly secular society, possibly with a Christian majority (?)
- large landlords and landless farmers in Kregon
- (needs adding to...)

Artania is the original Particracy continent, which may imply Artanian settlers (that's the new Endralon story: colony of settlement with no indigenous people), but on the other hand there are wiki entries on the history of several of our Seleyan neighbours that imply continuity with their pre-modern histories, rather than settlement from overseas.

MessageMention has been made of distinct localised religions.

Culturally, there was this also:

"Reading up on Rapulese history (in translation of course) apparently the state capital is established in one of the few lowland areas of Rapula and, until the national administration sited the local government there, it was only a smallish town. The area itself was not considered part of the former lands of Rai Poo Lar until administrative restructuring, based on railway access, saw it included in the modern region.

Historically, the spiritual centre, Con Sol Amar, was far up amid the mountain range. It is still a relatively small village despite the fact that most Rapulese, even now, visit it at least once in their lives. During the busiest influx of visitors the permanent buildings are surrounded by a city of tents."

MessageI was thinking that we have a sort of Argentine economy - good potential and an educated workforce, but unpredictable in general. We support the New World Option, it would fit in with our old RP, and maybe Lodamun, with the Andalan peninsula would have made a good trading outpost for the Englars, or other Artanian settlers, while other parts of Seleya may not have. This trading outpost could perhaps have had many men and few women, so the men procreated with the indigenous females, forming a primarily mestizo society.

MessageAlthough I think Alien Born has said most of Lodamun has not been a colony, I think it would be consistent with previous RP to suggest the area of Rapula was added reasonably recently (perhaps a hundred years or so before the beginning of this parliament) and the people there, although not openly hostile to its incorporation were at least reluctant.

Perhaps, crowded on all sides by lowlanders, they agreed to a protectorate in order to avoid inclusion into the harsher regimes of Likatonia or Valruzia. Despite integration into Lodamun, their mountainous location has kept them reasonably secluded and they still share a cultural heritage with the neighbours who found themselves within the borders of those other two countries.

MessageThat would be consistent with Chinese history: say Kregon or Andalay as the heart of the empire (the Yellow River civilization that later became China) gradualyl expanding its suzerainty over opther areas, with Rapula as a tribal-style Yunnan or even Tibet.

I like the New World line, but with ethnicity comign things could change, and i think China also allows for "indigenous" minorities -- that's the line being taken to mobilize minorities, very indigenist. Contrary to popular belief, China is an extremely multicultural society, despite the homogenizing efforts of the regime.

MessageWe have had comments in the past about not having independence celebrtations due to our never having been a colony etc. (Not my comments, but I don't remember who made them)

CNT - we have a strong economy, which is nothing like Argentina's. Argentina dewpended almost exclusively on two or three industries (Ranching and mineral extraction) and when these failed due to commodity price collapses and foot and mouth disease the whole economy went down the drain. (I find it strange that people think that the Argentines are well educated. Only the rich there are educated at all, and they are educated to think that any one else is beneath their concern. But I live in Southern Brazil so I am biased)

So far it seems that we could model Lodamun on China or Russia. Both have the core states and the peripheral later additions. Both are highly heterogenous in their peoples and languages, and neither are fully industrialised yet. I have a preference for Russia, but China would be fine.

MessageWhat about a Greek style system of different cities and towns, later unified into 5 nations. Andalay could have gained an advantage from trade with Artanians and others(due to its location), and used this advantage to unite the other 4 states. The states could have their own customs and traditions this way, but still be united as people of Lodamun

MessageI assume you mean the city state style of non nation that existed in the classical times in what is now Greece. We would prefer to see something a little less conflict prone. No two ancient greek cities were at peace with each other for very long. (The main reason why they fell to the romans, the persians, the phonecians etc.)

MessageI meant that this could have been Lodamun's ancient past, before being united under Port Andalay(prior to "modern" history).

Messagefairly recent uniting of the five regions seems more consistent with what we've been saying until now.

MessageSo the independent city-states later unified idea is fine?

Im thinking that the unification could have begun a long time ago, with the first progress being made near 1950ish, perhaps Golavia or Norstavan could have been annexed then. Rapula could have been the last to be added, near 2000.
