Description[?]:
This bill aims to introduce the Zumwalt-class destroyer to replace the ageing Kidd-class and Spruance-class currently in service with our navy. The Zumwalt-class introduces multiple new concepts to modern destroyer design, including but not limited to: 1) The Advanced Gun System (AGS) is a 155mm rocket fired from a gun barrel. Currently tested to 59nm, the range of the AGS will eventually extend to over 100nm. 2) The Peripheral Vehicle Launch System (PVLS) enables us to place cruise missile pods in the middle of the ship hull, providing us with cruise missile capabilities from smaller naval destroyers. 3) Dual-band radar. The radar will send and receive S-band (high altitude large airspace) and X-band (high altitude near airspace) signals with a common-phase conformal array on the deckhouse. Each band will have its own signal processors, with the returns combined by the display sensor manager. This system will provide high detection and excellent anti-jamming capabilities. 4) Permanent Magnet Motor. This system produces a high amount of energy from incredibly low amounts of fuel. 5) Stealth technology. Despite the vessels being 40% larger than Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, they have the radar returns of only a fishing boat. They produce incredibly low amounts of noise, comparable with that of Los Angeles-class missile submarines. The movement of water along the side of the vessel and passive cool air induction will lower thermal emissions. The Navy is also looking for the construction of two Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, one Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine and two Seawolf-class attack submarines |
