Bill: Fewer prisoners act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Cooperative Commonwealth Federation

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2110

Description[?]:

It shall be the law of Lodamun that no one may be sent to prison becasue of poverty or inability to pay a court-imposed fine.

The government may, if a person is found guilty of a crime but is not able or willing to pay their fine, subtract money directly from the convict's paycheque, so long as this would not reduce the person to an income insufficient to support themselves and/or their family.

Courts may also sentence a convicted criminal to do restitution in non-monetary form to the victim of their crime.

The aim of this bill is to reduce the number of people in prisons, and thereby as a side effect to reduce the cost of the prison system.

MessageOne thing though...Repeat offenders

If someone is ordered to pay a fine, but cannot due to the living expenses exemption...They must have some alternative punishment if they continue to commit the same crime.
