Message | Where ever possible government functions should be done at the local level. They should always be done at the lowest reasonable level. |

Message | What are you basing that on? Local government should manage things to small for the national to and national government should control everything to large for local. The fire service falls under the latter. |

Message | Uh, no. Not just things "too small" for the state. Local governments should manage everything that is not impossible or irrational (for example--local research of nuclear weapons; too much possibility of abuse or danger to others). I fail to see how fire service is "to large" anyway. |

Message | Because some thins are to expensive for a local government to provide on its own. Say a large fire starts, then just firemen and engines might not be enough to stop it spreading. Helicopters, mass clearances etc. are things local government can't afford, hence it falls to national government. PS Why should they manage everything instead of national government? Just saying 'it should' isn't to effective. PPS IRL I'm firmly in favour of devolution to the lowest level. Your not doing it justice. |

Message | That is why there are grants... where the national and/or state gov't pays for part or most of the 'expensive' stuff for the locals. |
Date | 10:15:09, March 11, 2008 CET | From | Party for a Federal Meritocracy | To | Debating the Fire Service |
Message | Grants. loans of equipment, special units at the higher government levels to be used when needed... All sorts of options besides telling the lower level governments that they are incapable of handling local crises. |
