Bill: Wartime Conscription Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: New Liberal Party of Endralon
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2557
Description[?]:
The anti-draft mentality on gorunds of individual freedom is ridiculous. In times of national duress, the government should have the right, on behalf of the people, to conscript citizens to defeat any existential threat to the Republic of Endralon. John Stuart Mill once said that there are three legitimate reasons for coercion of the individual other than protection of others: - Taxes - Jury duty - Military conscritption Although there are probably a few more, this shows that even the most liberal of political philosophers understood the importance of a national draft in a liberal society. |

Message | Interesting how anything can be justified these days as long as it's for the "greater good" or "on behalf of the people." |

Message | These days? JS Mill isn't exactly modern. This would only be used when Endralon is under existential threat. Surely the preservation of the republic comes before the right of an individual not to go to war. Please note the word 'can be' in the phrasing of the article. |

Message | You cannot make someone fight a war they simply don't agree with. No, JS Mill isn't exactly modern, he died in 1873, I'd like to think things have changed since then. |

Message | Obviously things have changed CP. What if the West had no conscription during WW2. You'd rather see Nazi Germany triumph than force people to fight it. Shame on you CP. |

Message | If the people don't want to fight Nazi Germany, then the people should not have to fight Nazi Germany. This has nothing to do with our party wanting to "see Nazi Germany triumph", this is about defending the rights and beliefs of the people. Shame on us for allowing the people to live a free life? Shame on you NLPE for wanting to send your people against their wishes to die at war. |

Message | "Surely the preservation of the republic comes before the right of an individual not to go to war." No. Principles cannot be compromised. While I would agree, and encourage through other means, people volunteer for wars against enemies like Nazi Germany, I don't believe it is quite right to force people to go to war. |

Message | Principles can be difficult to reconcile with each other. Defending the world against totalitarianism comes before any other consideration that might preclude the introduction of a draft. |

Message | I'm not sure why it would be Endralon's responsibility to protect the world from totalitarianism. |

Random fact: Players consent to the reasonable and predictable consequences of the role-play they consent to. For example, players who role-play their characters as committing criminal offences should expect those characters to experience the predictable judicial consequences of that. |
Random quote: "Soldiers are not the enemies of the movement. They're potential allies. They're more than that. Soldiers are the only people in America who are paying a stiff price for this war. Everybody else profits. Soldiers are the ones losing their lives, losing friends, having their lives disrupted. The real victims of American imperialism are its soldiers." - Fred Gardner |
