Bill: Alexandria Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Totalitarian Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: March 2112

Description[?]:

Presently, the government provides funds for local governments to establish and maintain libraries. We believe that an extensive, government funded system of public libraries would be much better. Inter-library communication would be streamlined, helping our citizens find the books they require. Libraries would have a centralised internet presence, helping reduce confusion and increase user satisfaction. Our nation's citizens would be far better off with one comprehensive network of libraries, rather than the current individual local libraries.

MessageWhile in the current system, each library can select books that are pertinent to the region, a larger, national system could provide those regional books and access to more through inter-library borrowing. As I see it, the current system allows local governments to operate libraries, but they are isolated from other libraries. A citizen wishing to borrow a book while in another state would need to apply for a new library card, etc. With the proposed system, the citizen could borrow a book using his current card, and can choose to return the book to their local library. I feel this is much more convenient for our nation's citizens.

MessageI was getting prepared to explain why I oppose this... but then I found your argument making sense. It should cost about the same amount of money, or maybe less, to run this system rather than to just give the money to local governments, and the benefits you suggest are indeed valuable. We'll vote yes.

MessageThe Vintallian library will remain one of the greatest. We are not proposing all existing libraries be torn down. We want a national system of libraries. The benefits to our citizens would be great.
