Bill: Religious Equality Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Democratic Capitalist Delegation

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: May 2560

Description[?]:

This bill is intended to promote two ideas.

1) We believe that all religious institutions should be mandated with the same responsibilities as other private instituions, but should also be awarded the same freedoms as any other private institution.

2) We believe that this government's current policies are restrictive on the right of the people to choose and faithfully execute their own set of religious values. As we are a party which promotes individual rights, we do not approve of such restrictions.

MessageWe can support Article 1 and Article 3, but I believe the state needs some say in the definition of what a religion is. Scientology claims to be a 'religion', and therefore without regulation would be permitted to set up a school, but we see Scientology as a cult or quasi-religious organisation of profit.

A suggest a redraft.

MessageIn response to the RRP: we are disappointed that a single article resulted in the RRP's defeating the overall benefits of this bill, but we appreciate your feedback none the less.

In response to the RP and LSD: We do not believe that the state should have the ability to define what is or is not a religion, and we believe that if scientology wanted to claim themselves as a religion, they should be allowed to do so. Especially given that the passing of this legislation would essentially mean treating religion the same way as any other organization for profit, it would make essentially no difference whether they claimed to be one or the other. However, we understand your concerns and strongly believe in negotiation, so we will promptly re draft this bill with article 4 repealed.

Random fact: Real-life organisations should not be referenced in Particracy, unless they are simple and generic (eg. "National Organisation for Women" is allowed).

Random quote: "I bet their mothers don't love them. Many Trigunian women are so cold. I mean it's a racist hellhole in parts." - Tirza Sommer, former Dorvish politician
