MessageThe Democratic Alliance is a free trade party, and although we support all efforts to persuade other countries to remove tariffs on our exports, we don't believe protectionist trade wars are the way forward. Aldegar should take the lead in helping trade to liberalise trade throughout the world.

MessageThis seems common sense - it is hardly in our interests to import tariff-free from countries which insist on levying tariffs on our exports to them. Rather, we should renegotiate for a mutual and simultaneous lifting of the barriers on both sides.

MessageThe PLP concurs with the DA. This policy does not stop nations which impose tariffs on our goods (and whom under this policy would therefore be subject to reciprocal tariffs) from exporting to nations we have free trade agreements with and then shipping them on to us free of tariifs. It would be near impossible in an era of global trade to determine the nation of origin of goods received and would would require a significantly expanded (and in our opinion more wasteful) bureaucracy which would need to enforce this policy. It would simply confuse business and consumers. We suggest having no trade barriers which regardless of tariffs imposed on us should encourage our economy to specialise in industries in which we have a comparative advantage.

MessageSo, while others may put up tariffs do hurt our economy, we will continue to allow them free trade within our nation? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to the Junkers.

MessagePerhaps the Junkers are confused? the very purpose of the bill is to establish a situation where we allow free trade with those who do not impose tariffs upon our exports. If they put up tariffs to hurt us, we will respond in kind.
