Bill: Act of Empire

Details

Submitted by[?]: 帝国公明党 (Teikoku Kōmeitō)

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2572

Description[?]:

Sekowo has been threatened for far to long, and as a Federation we have seen our reactions to these threats be far from what they should be.

We must show the world that Sekowo means business, that Sekowo will not be intimidated and that Dovani is the sovereign territory of Dovanians, and Sekowo is one its keepers.

To do this we must become an Empire, a truly great polity that will strike fear into the hearts of our enemies and show glorious compassion to our allies.

However we can not just change everything suddenly, as that would cause instability, this first bill will act as the beginning of our transition.

With the passing of this legislation Sekowo's name will change form the 'Federal Commonwealth of Sekowo' to the 'Imperial Commonwealth of Sekowo'.

MessageThis is just the first step, eventually the HoG title will change, and the new Monarchy will come into being, though that part requires the most discussion.

MessageHeh, on the other hand, we are currently in favor of the elected HoS system. However, we believe that even an elected HoS can be imbued with the pomp of monarchy and the militaristic flavors of empire.

We can think of several advantages of Empire:
1. An empire, being by nature an enterprise of military might, is much more imposing and intimidating in the international arena.
2. The monarchists are a powerful international force (OOC: and very active in RP). Perhaps we will be able to use their zeal to stabilize our holdings.
3. Hulstria/Gishoto seems to have a monarchy most of the time. Our status as Empire will strengthen our ties with them.

But there are also disadvantages:
1. The legitimacy of our holdings, although they are governed under the principles of equality and freedom, will have the odor of exploitation that comes with "empire."
2. Zealously democratic/communist nations will not involve us in their affairs as often, and our status may even become a source of hostility.

But, in the end, we think that pros outweigh the cons.

MessageIt is apparent now that the former DSP has about as much care for the freedom of Sekowans as they would for a pile of festering dog snot. NEVER, we repeat, NEVER will we let such a cause stand.

MessageWe disagree.

We are glad, however, that the Socialists have dropped their former pretenses of democracy, which were thinly enough veiled. This is much more suiting.

MessageAt last the "Democratic Socialists" are revealed for the reactionary monarcho-capitalists they truly are. We repudiate all former ties to these newly unveiled oppressors of the proletariat and know that they shall fall to the dictatorship of the proletariat soon enough.

OOC:
We need some more history, eventually, probably 150 game years from now I'll change back to being anti-monarchy, but for now I'm going a slightly different direction.

MessageLet's look at form and content. In content, Sekowo IS an empire. We have conquered many lands and subjected many peoples against their will to our rule. Yes, we have made efforts to be democratic and fair to our conquered subjects, but we would be naive and self-deceiving if we think that they wanted to be under the Sekowan yolk. That is the reality--we are an empire in everything but name--a nation that has acquired lands through conquest and military might! Why don't we match our form, our name, with the reality of things?

MessageTechnically only half the lands we colonized have people, and technically we don't take over other nations, hence why they Kli'kut confederation is recognized by us as a unique separate polity.

Also, the Kuragerians love us, so they did'nt have a problem joining.

MessageWow, that sounds like a rather convenient set of events. And why did we colonize those uninhabited lands? Was it for the sand? Or the permafrost? Or was it some rich bit of land that, by chance, had no inhabitants?

MessageWell you're the one who started us off colonizing, so originally it was for whatever reason you had said, and we just followed along.
Then it was for land, since Sekowo proper does'nt have alot of farm area.
Though after Midway it became primarily to protect the untouched areas from malcontents, like Dranland, or non-Dovanian nations trying to colonize Dovani.

From Imperial Pluralism Party
ToDebating the Act of Empire
MessageAre we really all so ashamed of our colonial policies--the conquest, the imperialism, the coercion? These are the prices we paid for untold of wealth and world renown! If we are all so opposed to the concept of imperialism, then we ask the parties of Sekowo to revoke all of our colonial holdings and return them to the peoples we have oppressed. Let us end our tyranny and unfair control of native peoples...

...or do we love our colonies too much to let them go? Will we keep talking around the injustice of our colonies? Has there ever been a just empire?

MessageWe would gladly revoke all of our colonial holdings!

Or, failing that, we support full and immediate transformation of Sekowo into an absolute Confederacy, with all constituate states acting as equals under a unified government.

We're suppose to be sort of like America, that is we conquered a large area and eventually the areas became states.

Which could happen if we convinced the mods to make the next new nation (assuming they do) out of the areas that make up one of the protectorates.

MessageCP stands for the prosperity of this nation; business and people. Whether as a republic, confederation or whatever other form of government that best suits the needs and wants of the people of Sekowo. We do not believe a Sekowan Empire would benefit the people of this fine nation at this time. Many nations hold territories without being empires. We disagree also with the timing of a change of government when we still have a conflict to resolve. Let's first win that war. This topic should be debated thoroughly if need be after the conflict with CUP of Hutori is finished.

MessageAfter thinking about it, we have decided that CP is correct.

OOC:
Putting something to vote gets more discussion faster then letting it sit in debate.

Date07:35:25, May 05, 2008 CET
From Imperial Pluralism Party
ToDebating the Act of Empire
MessageEarlier in this dialog, we listed the pros and cons of establishing a Sekowan empire. At that point, we felt that the advantages outweighed the disadvantages--that a show of military might through merely symbolic political restructuring would help secure our Dovani holdings. However, as the dialog has progressed, it has become clear that the distinction between form and content is more significant for both the parties and people of Sekowo than we had estimated. We still believe that Sekowo is, in essence, an Empire. At the same time, we can see the advantages to maintaining the image of a free and federal commonwealth both in national and global affairs, even if this image is not entirely a reflection of fact.

Therefore, we have decided against this Act for the sake of stability within Sekowo and the FSC.

MessageWe agree that Sekowo is currently essentially an Empire. However, we feel that we should move AWAY from its Imperial tendencies, rather than TOWARD them.
