Message | Why ? The local communities can decide for themselves. Doesn't that fit in the liberal traditions and believes? We are curious which objections the LP have on this matter. |

Message | No. Whenever you transfer power up away from citizens to the state (whether at a local or national level) you are acting counter to liberal traditions. If this seems counter intuitive, imagine society as a pyramid. Central government is at the top, the people are at the bottom, local governments are just above the people, provincial governments are between the local government and central government. Any time you transfer power up the pyramid, you move power away from the people and towards the state - that is centralisation. Whenever you transfer power down the pyramid, you move power away from the state and towards the people - that is devolution. We libertarians believe that individuals are best placed to judge what is right for them (especially with regard to 'moral' issues) and hence the power should remain with the people. At the moment, the power rests with the people which we support. |

Message | But sometimes we have to protect society against not wanted behavior when not regulated. Individuals on their own are not in the position to do so. |

Message | No, we have to protect society against *harmful* behaviour. Behaviour that you just find unattractive is not harmful. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea of seeing fat naked men wandering around the street, but just because I don't like it doesn't mean I have the right to make it illegal. |
