MessageNo. We can not support this bill. We agree that research in to the use of cannabinoids in the development of new, safe analgesics is vital, but the idea of using cannabis itself in medicine is horrific! cannabis is a dangerous, impure product which causes damage to the autonomic nervous system, causes schizophrenia and other psychoses and recent research suggests it actually causes structural changes to the brain. What a terribly irresponsible proposal!!!!

MessageThe bill makes clear that cannabis will be used only with the agreement of a doctor and in line with best medical practice. If best medical practice is that it will be used as a component part of an analgesic rather than in a pure form, then of course that is precisely what will happen.

MessageThere is currently no pharmaceutical form of cannabinoids extracted and standardised from the natural product. Therefore no such use in safe analgesia is possible. Before any such extract can be isolated and converted to an appropriate dosage form we first need to identify exactly which chemicals contained in cannabis have which effects. We are still some way from this point and even when we do get there we need full toxicology and clinical trials of an appropriate dosage form before we can approve use in medicine. Remember, Doctors only prescribe the drugs which they are advised to prescribe. Until much more research is done we must continue to say "NO".

MessageThis proposal gives doctors the right to prescribe cannabis, in an appropriate quantity and to be taken in an appropriate way, in line with appropriate medical advice. They will, of course, be under an obligation to weigh up the risks versus the benefits, as they would with any other medical treatment.

MessageThe Grand Duke finds cannabis extremely relaxing and believes it has contributed towards making him the well-balanced and responsible citizen of Aldegarian society that he is.
