Bill: CPL Trade Bill
Details
Submitted by[?]: Conservative Liberal Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: May 2115
Description[?]:
We propose that reciprocal tariffs are put on imports from nations that apply tariffs to our exported goods. However this can only be in response to another nation, we must not put tariffs on any nations goods who continue to trade freely with Likatonian business's. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change International trade (this is a default in the absense of a specific free trade agreement or specific trade embargo)
Old value:: The nation does not impose any tariffs or quotas on imports.
Current: The nation allows for imports, but imposes "ethical" tariffs on nations with lower environmental and labour rights standards.
Proposed: The nation imposes reciprocal tariffs on imports, with no tariffs imposed on states which impose no tariffs on our exports.

Message | The AAP believes this must be a case-by-case concern. We cannot see how we can support something that has the potential to limit free trade in this way, with too little direct application, and too much potential for abuse. |

Message | How does this fulfll any of the above concerns. Tariffs will only be applied to imports against nations who have already threatened our econom by putting tariffs on our exports. |

Message | Could the AAP explain exactly how this can be abused. (real curiosity - the LPE representative for economics is, er, on holiday, so we need help. As yet we are undecided on this issue.) |

Message | Well as you are not going to take the trouble to persuade us, we shall oppose. |

Message | Change of mind. Having given it long thought we are prepared to support this bill after all. The LPE is split in cases of economics and discussions are heated, so this may not be a decision abided by by future LPE members. |

Message | Ah, the sad state when the AAP is 'distracted' for a brief interval. :( The problem with the CPL legislation is that it 'thinks globally, acts globally'. Sounds great in theory... but what does it do in practise? Imagine for a second our comrades in Lodamun are trying to make a rational approach to fossil fuels... and decide to impose tariffs on oil products (universally), to promote research into other products WITHIN their own borders. Their internal policy would be ecologically progressive, their reasoning sound, their imposition universal... and yet, what happens to the Likatonian importers of Lodamun grain? All of a sudden, because of another sovereign power exploring routes to ecological friendliness, Likatonian grain-importers find their most basic cereal crops doubling in import price. Business loses out, and the whole cost cannot be absorbed by industry, so much of it is passed on to secondary producers (like the baking industry), and direct to consumers. That is the problem with tit-for-tat tariffing, and why the AAP opposes it. As we said, a case-by-case analysis is ESSENTIAL in international trade... if not for Terran free-trade, then for the good of LIKATONIAN free-trade. |
