Bill: TiC Internationalism Reform

Details

Submitted by[?]: Tuesday Is Coming

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2121

Description[?]:

The following policy on international aid shall be re-enacted(originally passed in "stop legalized theft")
"Tax money is taken from Lodamun Citizens, with the explicit purpose of benefitting the people of Lodamun.
Foreign aid fails to benefit the people of Lodamun, and is widely seen to cause harmful economic tendencies in the nations which recieve it.
We assert that any tax money given to other countries as foreign aid belongs solely to the people of Lodamun, and that no other country's citizens have more of a legal claim to that money than the people who earned it:
We propose that the Parliament of the Independent Republic of Lodamun immediately cease ALL forms of monetary gifts to other nations. Let them collect their own taxes, allow our citizens to give to international charities on their own.

A government agency, established for this purpose, shall continue to accept voluntary donations that shall be directed into foreign aid. This agency shall be funded entirely without tax money, a portion of donations shall be used instead. Each year, there shall be a report to the public detailing how the money was spent.

Let this bill not be construed as to mean that we oppose all foreign aid, we just oppose compulsory taxation used for foreign aid. If this bill passes, citizens will have maximum choice over how their money is spent toward other countries, even if they would prefer that a government entity directs it

All charitable contributions, local, national, international, and other, shall be tax deductible"

International commerce regulation shall also cease, though nuclear arms sales shall not be permitted to anyone, inside or outside Lodamun. The reciprocal tariff policy shall not be affected.

Messagenot even disaster relief? May the government sell arms to Baltusia if we know they will invade us? To Kanjor, which might use them to commit genocide on its own citizens or once again invade our territorial waters?

out of curiosity, TIC, do you feel the government should be permitted to tax for disaster relief inside Lodamun? What about an earthquake off the coast of another country, followed by a tsunami that hits our coast?

MessageInside Lodamun, it's debateable. Depends entirely on the situation, who is to blame, how great the damage is, etc. But there are times when it is justified.

Messageglad to hear it. The logical conclusion then is that Lodamun lives are worth more than those of foreigners, if we can NEVER fund disaster relief outside our borders.

MessageLodamun lives are the responsibility and jurisdiction of the Lodamun government.

Foreigners are not.

Messageexactly. We are merely confirming the underlying premise: to our government, Lodamun lives are more valuable than those of foreigners. We disagree: all life has value. And even from a utilitarian perspective, *permitting* us to carry out *occasional* disaster relief overseas pays dividends in trade benefits and contracts to Lodamun corporations for reconstruction work. While we can acgree to disagree on the value of aid programming, we are concerned at the absolutism in this bill.

That debate being concluded in disagreement, can we ask for an answer to the question of whether Lodamun companies should be permitted to arm countries that are at war, or cold war, with Lodamun? If we are at war, will the government be permitted to impose an arms embargo on our enemy? (Lodamun has done this in the past, but this bill will prevent us from doing so in the future.)

MessageAll life has value. It is not ok for us to force this idea upon our citizens when it refers to foreigners, however.

MessageThe PCL would allow arms sales to Deltaria? That's rather surprising.
