Message | To what end would the government set up gated communities? I'm not sure I see the need, but I'm not necessarily opposed either. |

Message | Providing a community for our nation's soldiers and their families is one example I can think of. These soldiers may have to spend a large amount of time at a military base isolated from nearby towns. The community keeps the soldier's family nearby while keeping them safe from any dangerous activities conducted at the military base. I'm unsure of the meaning of "set up" in the proposal, though. I'm assuming it means the private sector or the government will be maintaining the community, as the government would have to hire private labour to construct the facility anyway. If this is so, I can't see the government allowing the private sector to run such a community. If I've misunderstood, I'd say the government would want to plan the community, as they would have an idea of future plans for the base, and would likely be unwilling to share them with a private company. |

Message | Gated communites are not simply housing for military personnel and dependencies. It controls who can live and go into certain areas. This is almost always going to be discrimanatory and lead to segregation. While we don't think the government should tell private groups what they can do, we also do not believe that the government should promote segregation. |
