Message | Mr Speaker, The institution of National Service makes our nation more united, as it forces everybody, rich or poor, whatever their religion or race or background, to undergo the same formative experience. Arthur Smith (General Secretary of Her Majesty's Loyal Trade Unionists) |

Message | * Major-General The Rt Hon William Baillie, HM Secretary of State for the War Office, stands: Mr Speaker, While I can personally vouch for the benefits of the "formative experience" of active service: such experience should be enjoyed by volunteers and patriots. As such I propose that in addition to the measures of this bill we reward those who do choose to serve their Queen and Country with citizenship. Those who are not prepared to make personal sacrifices for the greater good should be denied the privileges of voting or standing for public office. I yield the floor. |
