Bill: Anarch Anakrousite Reform Bill - International Trade

Details

Submitted by[?]: Commonwealth Workers Army

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2119

Description[?]:

The AAP believes that Likatonia has made a grave mistake, in the choice of it's 'neutral policy' to trade. Setting the 'default' to automatic reciprocation is a dangerous precedent... the financial equivalent of Mutually Assured Destruction.

The AAP believe that Likatonia needs to take a more case-by-case approach to International Trade, imposing traiffs and quotas ONLY incertain areas, and where such is the 'right' and best thing to do.

MessageNo, because the proposal allows us to apply tariffs to nyone, wheeras the current legislation gives us the option to put tariffs only on nations that have harmed our economy by placing tariffs.

MessageThat is ridiculous, for two reasons:

First: If we HAVE a trade agreement, the 'default' setting doesn't apply, anyway.

Second: The current legislation automatically punishes us if another nation imposes a tariff.

The difference is, imposing tariffs and quotas in certain areas, allows us to assess the impact of a tariff - both on our trade partners AND our own industry.

Sometimes, applying a 'revenge' tariff is going to do us MUCH more harm, than good.

MessageOOC: Now I wish you had both spoken up a bit more in the previous debate. You will remember that the LPE was swinging back and forth rather alarmingly in its viewpoint. This is because this is an issue I have not really considered before, nor had time to think about. I asked for advice, received none, and am now thoroughly confused. I am still willing to be swayed, but the AAP is going to have to have some pretty good explanations of HOW this is going to do us harm, to get me to damage my visibility to such an extent as to change my mind. Please forgive me for my uselessness at economics, it is hereditary.

MessageThe AAP representatives were unfortunately indisposed during the ENTIRE period during which the previous material was pushed through. Investigations are underway into the incidents which caused such absence, and (unfortunately) led to the brevet-promotion of our new Chief-of-Finance, Arius DeForte.

We apologise to our friends in the LPE that we appeared to have abandoned them to the predations of right-wing politics.

The AAP response to THAT previous legislation:

"The problem with the CPL legislation is that it 'thinks globally, acts globally'. Sounds great in theory... but what does it do in practise? Imagine for a second our comrades in Lodamun are trying to make a rational approach to fossil fuels... and decide to impose tariffs on oil products (universally), to promote research into other products WITHIN their own borders. Their internal policy would be ecologically progressive, their reasoning sound, their imposition universal... and yet, what happens to the Likatonian importers of Lodamun grain?

All of a sudden, because of another sovereign power exploring routes to ecological friendliness, Likatonian grain-importers find their most basic cereal crops doubling in import price. Business loses out, and the whole cost cannot be absorbed by industry, so much of it is passed on to secondary producers (like the baking industry), and direct to consumers.

That is the problem with tit-for-tat tariffing, and why the AAP opposes it. As we said, a case-by-case analysis is ESSENTIAL in international trade... if not for Terran free-trade, then for the good of LIKATONIAN free-trade".

MessageAs a matter of international politics, we of the RLP support the current system.

The knowledge that imposing tariffs on our goods will automatically lead to tariffs on theirs could give another nation pause before imposing them. If a situation such as that described by the AAP occurred, a specific trade agreement could be put into place to effect the change. Make reciprocity the norm, and make exceptions in the rare instances where justified.

Messagewe teh LPE understand both points of view and are still having trouble deciding among ourselves. For the sake of continuity, we will this time oppose, but in the future, after a suitable lapse of time, may be persuaded to reconsider.

Random fact: In cases where players have failed to clearly and accurately reference their nation's RP laws in the "Bills under debate" section, Moderation will rule them invalid if a challenge is made to their validity.

Random quote: "The Revolution needs to progress. We as humans need to evolve into higher beings through better moral virtues. And we can achieve that if we clean ourselves from the immoral. Those who go against the Revolution, go against human progress and must be freed in the most humane way possible. That is why we introduced the guillotine." - Maximus Robertson, former Davostani revolutionary
