Bill: The Death Penalty Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Dranland First Party (CC)
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: July 2599
Description[?]:
The Reform Party believes that the death penalty is an appropriate punishment for capital crimes. It is an effective deterrant against potential criminals, and it is a appropriate retributive punishment for crimes involving the destruction of life or equivelant. Justice must always be commensurate, and so in order for punishments to be adequate and proportionate to the crimes committed, it is only right that the death penalty be applied for certain crimes. Under this legislation, the death penalty will be applicable for the following crimes: - Murder - Rape - Child sex abuse Whilst this legislation is to be made at a federal level, the contents within can be accepted or rejected by individual states and local governments, who may opt out if they see fit. This legislation is not meant to be binding and unifying for the whole nation - it merely allows individual regions the option to apply the death penalty, and encourages them to do so for capital crimes if they see fit. |

Message | For such reprehensible acts as those, a quick death at the hands of government is the easy way for such criminals. They should be kept imprisoned for the rest of their lives, constantly reminded and forced to think about what they've done. If they are executed, they (and others as well) will think of them more as martyrs than scum. In their case, the death penalty is not severe enough. |

Message | We certainly respect the Freeminded People's Parties' point of view in this matter - in some perspective, a life sentance may seem harsher than a death sentance. But the Reform Party has several reasons for prefering the death penalty to the life sentance in such crimes, and they are as follows: First of all, from a purely logistical perspective, the costs associated with a life sentance in prison are immense, and comes from the tax-payer's pockets. Food and staff costs for life sentances can be enormous in themselves, let alone other expenses. This is an unfair burden on tax-payers, and a price they should not be expected to pay for someone else's crimes. Secondly, allowing murderers, rapists, etc. to live the full length of their life . To the Refom Party, living a life, no matter what standard of living one has, is better than having no life at all. In many cases, lifers also earn bail at some point in their sentance, after reaching their minimum of 30 or 40 years. The death penalty seems more proportionate to such severe crimes - if a murderer takes someone's life, it is only proportionate that his life is taken in return, so that justice is balanced. And, contrary to the Freeminded People Party, we do believe that the death penalty is a harsher punishment than life in prison. These are our main reasons or proposing the death penalty over the life sentance. We hope that this explanation has been informative, and that the Freeminded People's Party can change their minds on this issue. |
