Message | Geanna Saragat stands before the Senate and says the following: Honorable Senators, as the recently appointed Minister of Health and Social Services, I have made it a priority to look into the health and well-being of women. I have made a particular effort to examine the welfare of women in unhappy marriages. What I have found is shocking. Even in jurisdictions in which women may initiate divorce, since the passing of restrictions enumerating the legal grounds of divorce, wives who face domestic violence have become significantly less likely to seek an end to their marriages. This is despite the fact that current national law permits divorce when violence is a factor. I can only conclude that many women who would otherwise seek divorce are afraid of the ramifications of coming forward with their stories of domestic violence. As a member of the Social Democratic Party, I believe that it is the responsibility of the state to provide health care to all citizens. However, I also believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I believe that we need to remove regulations from divorce to allay ourselves of the cost -- and I don't just mean the monetary cost -- of domestic violence. I therefore implore you to support the Free Spouses Act, which has been submitted before you. |
