MessageWhat kind of things are presently unpatentable, and what effect would bringing this to law have on our economy?

MessageRight now all kinds of software work from operating systems right to BPO.

Protecting works ensures that there will be constant innovation. As it stands any innovation is punished since the firm which spends its money developing software finds its technology stolen by rivals. IAs a result nobody invest in new ideas or technology .

MessageReplaced with innovation by large scale collaboration. Swings and roundabouts. We're for the status quo.

MessageI have yet to see something like medicinal drugs being developed by the status qou. These take very long and cost tremendous amounts of money to develop and bring to market. You'd be fool to try to do that without patents. The same applies to a lot of software as well.

MessageHowever that leads to innovation only in profitable areas. Despite increasingly desparate need there have been no new anti biotics for nearly 50 years - there is not enough profit in them. Opensource is being increasingly seen as a viable buisiness model for other sectors of the economy.

MessageI suggest you check your facts ...here's what I found....http://www.molbio.princeton.edu/courses/mb427/2001/projects/02/antibiotics.htm

Yes it's true that a lot of money gets spent on things like viagra and fat reducing drugs. However, there is a lot of money spent on cancer research , aids and many other important diseases.
Opensource works well as a way to do simple stuff. Nobody is going to put up $359 million to develop a new drug everytime, if there is no profit in it. http://ihumans.com/news_comments_archive/cost_of_drug_development.htm

Random fact: Once approved, players should copy Cultural Protocols into a bill in the debate section of their nation page, under the title of "OOC: Cultural Protocols". This bill should include links to the passed Cultural Protocol bill and the Moderation approval.
