Bill: Fair Tax Proposal of January 2614

Details

Submitted by[?]: Spenocratic Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill proposes to change income taxes. It requires more than half of the legislature to vote yes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: September 2614

Description[?]:

The Spenocratic Party propose to adjust the government's tax policy to better address the economic situation of Likatonia.

We propose a Fair Tax, also know as a flat national sales tax. It allows for better competition on the glabal market and allows people to essentially choose when to pay taxes. It is a lot easier to administrate as well.

By removing the 32% corporate tax, prices of products will drop by about that rate. By removing the income tax, people will have more money, 18% more. It's like giving the people of Likatonia a raise, buy as much as 40%. Of course it will not work out this easily, but the basics are the same: prices go down, income goes up. People won't even notice a change in prices. No longer are we penalizing someone who starts a business. No longer are we punishing someone for working two shifts. True economics is about equal opportunity, not equal output.

MessageExactly - increasing the cost of essentials is disproportionately punitive on the poor.

MessageInnocente Immeressen presented the folowing argument:

"You can't cure poverty by throwing money at it. If the poor receive a 'raise', the cost of living will increase. Simple market forces. We are surprised (to be honest), to have to explain that.

Which is actually irrelevent, anyway - still the PROPORTION of earnings is punitive. The wealthy will pay almost nothing (proportionally) on 'essentials', and the poor will pay a far greater (proportional) amount."

MessageIn the case where the AMSuDP doesn't like our wording, let's replace the word 'raise' with letting them keep their money and choosing when to spend it so that they can save money to spend on the things that matter.

Message"That is irrelevent. The Spenocrats are showing their youth as a government party. What happens when you increase the wage for everyone, WITHOUT some form of regulation on the market? Simply put - the market increases prices rapidly, to match the increase in income value - it's a basic principle.

And, far from adding regulation - the Spenocrats advocate reducing taxation on incomes, etc, and ADDING taxation to the basic essentials. Perhaps the Spenocrats don't understand that concept - those are the things people NEED. That is not discretuionary spending.

So - more of the poor person's income is going to be swallowed up on non-discretionary spending, leaving them LESS discretionary cash - if any. No discretionary spending from the poor, lowered discretionary spending from the middle classes. Slightly higher spend from the wealthy (who would spend anyway, because it's ALL discretionary).

In other words, an easy way to bankrupt a nation."

MessageIt is not as if though we are pouring more money into the system like so many of the socialist principles in this nation suggest. The money taken from people though taxation is still being spent, just without the consent of the taxpayer. We are just letting them control more of their money.

The rise in prices will be minimal, if anything at all. Becuase we are eliminating the corporation tax (which currently raises prices at the manufactoring level) and the income tax (which currently causes small business to raise taxes), the sales tax will simply be filling in the gap that the other two taxes left.

With this tax, poor people will pay for what they need, and they can save up the rest of the money without the government taxing it. Instead of automatically taking X% of what they own, they will only be taxed on hat they buy. With the money that they don't spend (which won't be taxed), they can wait untill they have enough money to get an education or to buy their own house, that is, unless the socialists won't allow them to.

Message"Price rises do not depend on corporation tax. Markets expand to fill available income. Without regulation, suppliers always increase their prices until they meet resistance, that is why there are few (or no) products in the market that are actually sold at a price that matches what they cost.

It's called a profit-margin, and it really is a basic business principle.

We notice that the 'spenocrats' stil insist on ignoring the fact that taxing essentials is disproportionate, because it affects the mandatory spending component of expenditure, which is a disproportionately higher part of the spending of the poor.

We would like them to address that issue, but expect them not to.

This kind of economic flimflammery can only survive so long as it's architects lie about it's effects."

MessageAddressing the essentials tax:

"The Spenocrats do not like the essentials tax. In fact, we do not like any tax. Our goal is to shrink government to a size where we no longer need it. For now, our big spending habits are to demanding to have a luxury tax only.

By letting them keep more of their money (which will go to buy things they could buy themselves), they can focus more on the essential goods. They may be paying slightly more, but they will be able to afford it now.

Also, buy having such low compulsary taxes, we will become a competition groud for new companies. Competition will bring the lower prices that the poor would like. Making it easy for a business to be created, more jobs would be generated. More jobs are just what the poor need. Not more welfare handouts.

Unless we cut spending, the people will have to pay taxes one way or another. At least I suggest we give them a choice of when to spend.

Seeing how the left is always rambling on about universality, it is confusing as to why they don't think all items should be taxed equally.

Remember, the rich are also paying the luxury tax as well, not just the poor.

Message"These so-called Spenocrats live in a world of delusion. It's cute, I'll grant you, but it's a nonsense - not EVERY Likatonian can own their won business. It's just not a realistic model. It doesn't even make a realistic ideal - most people don't WNAT to own their won business, and all the headaches that go with it.

If the 'spenocrats' are so keen on removal of all government, then they can start by removing the spenocrats from government. That's the problem with these so-called anarchistic parties, and their small-government ideals - what they always mean is small government EXCEPT us. Lead by example, hypocrites.

We certainly do NOT think all products should be taxed equally - and we're quite proud to stand behind that. Products are not our concern, and neither are businesses. What WE care about, are the people - and taxing PRODUCTS equally is unfair to people. That's our yardstick of why the 'spenocrats' are wrong."
