Bill: Voluntary Identification

Details

Submitted by[?]: Revival Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2120

Description[?]:

In a step to ensure security without compromising liberty we propose a voluntary ID card scheme. This way we can help law enforcement in some cases (where people have volunteered) but without oppressing the people. We also propose some benefits to the card such as quicker obtaining of benefits etc.

MessageI am not happy with a voluntary scheme. Those that don't have ID cards will effectively become second-class citizens if they don't have these benefits on offer. How will the costs be dealt with? If they're dealt with by those that volunteer for the cards, then many who cannot afford the cards will suffer and it will effectively create two classes of citizen. If the costs are dealt with by the government, why not just go for a compulsory scheme?

MessageState-issued identification would establish a dangerous precedent. This bill would provide a stepping-stone to compulsory identification and a loss of the worker's privacy and civil rights.

MessageGiven our particular immigration policy, I'd prefer as well compulsory.

MessageA ID Card Scheme would work best if it were compulsory rather than voluntary. But how would the costs of this system be dealt with?

MessageThe costs of this system can be absorbed a means tested charge for those who are able to pay.

I only suggested a series of benefits that wouldn't necessarily harm those who didn't have it and I am wary of moving to compulsory ID cards. But would i have any support for compulsory ID card scheme?

MessageFrom the Tudehs you would. It's good to see that you didn't move to have ID cards as having to be carried at all times.
