Message | Booooo! Bad Capitalist, bad! Public Schooling good! (That's as far as I'm going to go with this arguement) |

Message | Capitalism is about economics, the voucher system sees to it that even the poorest families have access to a wider choice of education than they would under a public school system. ] The only fundamental difference between our policies is that public schools are OPERATED by the state as a monopoly provider. This is a social policy difference rather than an economic one. Since governments do about as a good job running schools as they do running anything else, why would a socialist party - who presumably wants the best for the poor people, wish to consign them to the worst possible education (thus guaranteeing that they remain the poorest people)? |

Message | Meh, people can still set up Private schools with low admission fees, special scholarships, and such, no one is telling them they can't, it's just the state provides an alternative. I don't see the problem, and it's up to the individual to decide whether state schooling a sufficient or not. Really, I could sway towards Private schooling, because although schooling is important, it's not essential for human life, therefore it's not the job of the goverment to provide it. It's just that I like the idea of public schooling. |

Message | That's precisely what I find odd. There are two issues about public v private schooling. The first is the perception that public schools are 'free' and provide access for all, while private schools are expensive and provide access only for the 'elite', i.e., the economic issue, which I expect to be the main reason for socialists to be pro-public school. The second is the operational control element - private schools can run themselves however they like while public schools have to teach whatever the government tells them to. I'm not sure why socialist persons need necessarily be pro-public school for this reason. When you say you like the idea of public schooling, it sounds like you are going for the second issue more than the first, is this true? If so, I am genuinely curious as to why (not trolling). |

Random quote: “The people's war isn't just a war of destruction, it is also a war of construction. We will build new facilities, new hospitals, new farms. We will seek to improve the lives of the people around us. This struggle will be as costly as the struggle against the bourgeois army, and indeed will be even more damaging to the enemy.” - Comrade X, former Hulstrian politician |
