Message | In both articles, we prefer the status quo - we see no reason for the federal government to strip local governments of political authority over this issue, particularly as it is not of federal concern. We cannot agree to any arbitrary legislation undermining local government rule and strengthening the federal government unnecessarily. |

Message | We believe in the people's rights to do as they please so long as they do not infringe upon other peoples rights. With that being said, I applaud the this government's focus on keeping harmful gateway drugs out of children's hands. On the other hand, we do not support the government telling people where they can and can't smoke. For this party, we would like to do without Article One, and because of that, we will vote 'nay' on this bill. Hopefully in the future, Article Two will be brought up on its own. Message | Regardless of its intentions, this legislation effectively adds to the arbitrary power of the federal government, thereby stripping local government's of their rightful autonomy and concentrating more power into fewer hands. Furthermore, we cannot see any reason why this issue should be the federal government's responsibility - do the NEP simply distrust local governments to represent the interests of the local families and communities they represent? We can assure the NEP that local governments are far more responsible and accountable to the people than the federal government, and thus, better able to handle issues that are not of national concern, per se. |

Message | Our main argument agianst devolution is it prevents a national unity. Also it produces inconsistancies in the law. One area might restrict smoking, another not. It's not that we don't trust local government, we just feel that the federal government can do better. And in response to the NUP, the reason we would tell people where or where not to smoke is to prevent harmful second hand smoke, as this is unfair and borderline cruel to the nonsmokers. We would ask you to rethink your voting. |
